As an alternative to Microsoft solutions and help reduce the total cost of ownership for small businesses and non-profits; BM Network Consulting utilizes open source software to provide a secure and stable platform using Canonical’s open source operating system, Ubuntu, as the base.
What is Open Source?
Open source is a development method for software that harnesses the power of distributed peer review and transparency of process. The promise of open source is better quality, higher reliability, more flexibility, lower cost, and an end to predatory vendor lock-in.
What is Linux?
Linux is an operating system similar to Microsoft Windows, but is built entirely upon open source software and in most cases, is completely free. Linux uses the GNU General Public License (GPL) which allows anyone the freedom to study, copy, change, and redistribute the software as long as the license is included.
What Open Source and Linux services do we offer?
BM Network Consulting offers open source and Linux solutions ranging from the desktop, laptop, and server operating systems to applications for business and everyday use. Below is just a few examples of the services that we offer.
Desktop/Laptop/Servers
We use the Ubuntu Linux operating system as the base for all of Linux solutions. Ubuntu is known for its ease of use, security, and for its stability.
Web Server
Using the LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) stack, we can setup a fully functional web server to host one or multiple websites. These websites can be simple HTML pages or they can utilize a scripting language and a database to provide a dynamic data driven website.
Mail Server
We offer two types of mail servers. The first uses the Postfix MTA, Courier, SquirrelMail, SpamAssassin, and ClamAV. With these open source programs, we can setup a basic mail server that can run in conjunction with your web server. Our second type of mail server is the Zimbra Collaboration Suite. Zimbra is the leader in open source collaboration software and is comparable to Microsoft Exchange. Zimbra includes the following features: email, address books, calendaring, instant messaging, notes, and a briefcase.
File/Print Server & Domain Controller
Utilizing eBox-Platform, which is built on top of Ubuntu, we can setup a complete File/Print server or Domain Controller with central authentication. This setup would be comparable with a Microsoft Small Business Server domain.
Enterprise Instant Messaging
Utilizing Openfire + Spark, we can build a enterprise class Instant Messaging platform for your local network or wide area network. Your users can reduce email traffic and phone calls while being able to collaborate instantly, transfer files, and visually share their desktops.
Firewall
SmoothWall is a small Linux based firewall that is easy to use and has the same features of an enterprise based firewall at a fraction of the price.
